Radiology/Imaging Device and Services Definitions for Data Collection Specifications and Rules

The Texas Legislature requires the Texas Health Care Information Collection program to collect data on radiological services from hospitals and from radiology and imaging centers.

I would like to responses to the following questions:

How many and which states are collecting data from radiology or imaging centers?
How did you define imaging devices and services, such as MRI, Echocardiography, Electron Microscopy, Venography, Magneto-encephalography, Ultra Sound imaging, etc...)?
Does anyone know where any federal definitions for these imaging devices are located?
Does any state regulate or register imaging devices that do not emit ionizing radiation? If so which State?

CA maintains a pretty extensive Rad Health program. Information can be found at the following. I'm sure the staff there would also be happy to answer questions, provide additional information on the text of the laws, etc.

The Texas Department of State Health Services radiation control program does not regulate MRI facilities; however, we do regulate lasers and intense pulsed light sources used in medical, industrial and entertainment applications. Richard

Tennessee does not yet require reporting from free-standing radiology or imaging centers but a law has been passed by the TN legislature that will require patient record level data from them in the future. Hospitals that provide imaging services do report this information in their patient level (discharge) data and these types of services are currently defined using revenue codes (such as, PET scans use revenue code 0404 in any revenue code field; MRI/MRA use revenue codes 061X in any revenue code field; CT scans use revenue code 035X in any revenue code field). In Q3 2007 discharge data TN will begin capturing HCPCS in the hospital discharge outpatient data so we will have the ability to provide the HCPCS codes associated with each revenue code.

The State Dept of Environment and Conservation has a radiological health section that registers the machines/devices used to provide imaging services and these facilities that use radioactive source material must be licensed. The State department inspects these facilities to verify the equipment is being used properly.
